London Lions To Compete In The 2022/2023 EuroCup Season

The London Lions' men side will be competing in the 22/23 Eurocup season, the annual professional club competition which began in 2002 and was organised by the Euroleague.

The EuroCup is regarded by many as Europe's second-tier basketball league, behind the EuroLeague of course. It's been home to many of the world's most famous EuroLeague teams including Alba Berlin, Valencia, UNICS Kazan and AS Monaco just to name a few. Just this past year, Italian side Virtus Segafredo Bologna took home the title, with Milos Teodosic taking home the MVP Award.

The current structure of the competition itself is very simple. This season, 20 teams will compete against each other in the first round of regular season matchups. The teams will be split into two groups of 10 (Group A and Group B) with each team playing each other twice (18 games per team), home and away. The top 8 teams from each group advance to the knockout stages, which will consist of single-game elimination matches between the teams from Group A and B all the way through the finals. Home court advantage will go to the highest seeded team and the matchups will be based on seeding (i.e. 1A vs 8B). The winner and runner up of the competition will qualify for next season's EuroLeague.

This will see the Lions take a step up in European competition from the FIBA Europe Cup which they competed in last season which although included a dominant set of qualifying rounds, ended in a group stage exit losing 5 out of 6 matches. This will be the first time a British side has competed in the EuroCup since the Guilford Heat in 2007 as this year has seen the competition's expansion into London and also into Paris.

With this upcoming EuroCup Season as well as the new format of the BBL season, the Lions are now set to be playing at least 50 Games during the 22'/23' season; this is just accounting for the regular seasons alone.
