BBL & WBBL Trophy Finals Sunday

BBL & WBBL Trophy Finals Sunday

The Trophy finals saw two fixtures take place yesterday afternoon with somewhat early tip-offs. The women tipped off first as the London Lions looked to go back-to-back against the Sevenoaks Suns.

The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team being able to get off the mark in the early minutes. The deadlock was broken by Holly Winterburn who splashed out a 3-ball to give the Lions the early lead. The quarter would finished 8-16 in favour of LDN.

From then on, London continued to up the intensity. Big performances from  Shanice Beckford-Norton and Joey-Leedham Warner as well as Holly Winterburn herself who would finish as the game's MVP, saw the Lions blowout the Suns to win their second WBBL Trophy in two years with a score of 72-36.

JLW most definitely had the play of the game and showed that a bit of extra hustle goes a long way.

The men were next as the London Lions took on the Cheshire Phoenix. Many expected that this one may be a bit of surprise as the Lions were without their starting point guard Isaiah Reese and big man Will Neighbour. They also just lost Julian Washburn for reasons that have not yet been disclosed.

The first half was tightly contested as both teams were unable to gain any significant advantage.

The second half however is where the Cheshire Phoenix were able to take advantage of the Lions' absentees. The fourth quarter saw LDN only able to score 13 points whilst Cheshire scored 21. This gave the Phoenix all the breathing room they needed and eventually gave them the victory, winning their first BBL Trophy for nearly 2 decades.

Larry Austin Jr. was the MVP finishing with a huge double-double; 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds as well as 3 assists.

All in all, another great showcase for British Basketball. The season continues with plenty of regular season games still to go and titles to play for.
